Agent technology is a promising approach to address the current challenge of having systems that exhibit better re-configurability, robustness and responsiveness, introducing an alternative way to design control systems based on the decentralization of control functions over distributed autonomous and cooperative entities. Several EU R&D projects, such as IDEAS, GRACE, COSMOS and Self-Learning, are running aiming to deploy multi-agent systems into industrial environments. This session seeks contributions providing the experiences, demonstrations and roadmaps that as being developed under these R&D projects, which will help the industry to assess the application of new automation manufacturing paradigms for approaching the above requirements.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• System of Systems and Complex Systems Engineering;

• Agents and Multi-Agent Systems;

• Web-technology and Service-oriented Architectures;

• Self-organization and other self-* properties in factory automation;

• Application of agent-based and service-oriented technologies in industrial domains, such as manufacturing, power and energy systems (Smart Grids), collaborative networks and logistics.

Conference and exhibition Industrial Technologies 2012

The Industrial Technologies conference and exhibition, being the main event of the European Commission nanotechnology, materials, and new production technologies (NMP) theme, will be held in Aarhus, 19th - 21st of June 2012.

Participants will include members of the European Commission, the key research and technology organizations in Europe, and the front line R&D focused companies. The event will have substantial media coverage and serves as an ideal platform for speaking to decision makers.

IDEAS intelligent transportation workshop will be held on 19th and 20th September 2011 in Lisbon, Portugal

A special session will be organized on "evolvable production systems" on the 37th annual conference on the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, November 7-10, 2011, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Sustainability, defined as one of the main goals at the Lisbon and Gothenburg Councils, remains elusive in production systems. Sustainability is a scenario in which companies need to re-engineer rather than re-develop their existing production systems, within the shortest possible time, and at a minimal economic and ecological impact.

Evolvable Production Systems (EPS) is a viable paradigm to attain such goals, and is radically new: it does not focus on solutions which try to accomplish all of the envisaged production needs within a closed unit but, rather, a solution which, being based on several re-configurable, process-oriented, low granularity intelligent modules, allows for a continuous evolution of the production system. EPS also goes a step further by proposing a totally new way a considering the products and production systems: the design cycle of the products will be influenced by which modules are available.

EPS, with its distributed, multi-agent control approach and dynamic link between product design and production system development, may be considered as entering the realm of Complex Systems. In effect, the small-scale cooperating units with self-configuration, selfdiagnostics, and self-organisation will exhibit behaviours that cannot be forecasted or planned for: emergent behaviour. The main research focus is, therefore, to develop an open system architecture for an evolvable production system, with the necessary tools and methods for analysis of emergent behaviour and subsequent complex system development methodology.

A mechatronic multiagent systems workshop is held in Caparica in Portugal by UNINOVA. It covered the main aspects of multiagent programming with JADE in a mechatronic context.

The topics of the workshop were:

• agent in JADE - approach and basic behaviours,

• advanced JADE aspects like scheduling, communication, redundancing etc.,
